An Auto Driveaway Case Study
Challenge
An energy infrastructure client needed to reduce the order-to-delivery cycle time for its ½-ton pickup truck fleet. The OEM ship-through process was averaging 8–12+ weeks, vehicles were not consistently arriving with permanent (hard) plates, and multi-state title and licensing requirements were creating additional delays.
Auto Driveaway partnered with the fleet management company and upfitters to streamline logistics and compliance. By engaging earlier in the process, the team-initiated title and licensing activities before upfit completion, reducing the time between upfit completion and plating. Auto Driveaway also coordinated transportation more efficiently and ensured vehicles were delivered with hard plates whenever possible, issuing temporary tags only in limited cases. All pre- and post-delivery requirements were completed in advance, allowing drivers to receive work-ready trucks upon delivery.
Service level agreements (SLAs) and KPI reporting were implemented across a 300-vehicle initiative to provide visibility, accountability, and performance tracking throughout the program.
The overall time from OEM completion to driver delivery was reduced to 4–6 weeks. Auto Driveaway’s portion of the process was reduced to 8 days, improving from an average of 9.5 days in Year 1 to 8 days in Year 2. The percentage of vehicles delivered with hard plates also increased by 50%.
Additional benefits included faster replacement of aging units, which helped reduce potentially costly maintenance expenses. For new drivers using rental vehicles, the accelerated delivery process lowered rental costs by getting them into their assigned vehicles sooner.
Driver satisfaction also improved as employees received newer, safer vehicles instead of aging units that could present mechanical issues, body damage, or outdated technology.
